A Walk for Syria: High Fashion for a Cause
On February 26th, WUSC Laurentian hosted a one of a kind event at the university. Two Syrian refugee students will be attending the school in Fall 2016, and Yvonne Udowa; committee member, resident fashionista and blogger, decided that a fashion show would be the perfect way for WUSC Laurentian to support them. Read on to find out more about A Walk for Syria!
Can you tell us a little bit about what motivated you to organize A Walk for Syria? Who will benefit from this event, and how will this fashion show help support the cause?
A Walk for Syria was one of our biggest initiatives at WUSC Laurentian this year! We hosted the fashion show to raise funds to sponsor two Syrian student refugees who will be arriving at Laurentian in the fall.
Has Laurentian ever hosted an event like this before? What inspired you to host a fashion show as a fundraiser?
No, this was the first of its kind. I do a lot of fashion embedded side projects, so I offered to the exec team that, Hey! How about a Fashion Show? We had a showcase of five African fashion designers; three from Nigeria and two from Ghana. I had heard about them in the past and featured their collections on my platform www.thekaleidoscopian.com. So when this opportunity came, I reached our to them and they were more than excited to showcase their designs.
The designers who showcased their fashion at A Walk for Syria were:
- Nani Designs from Ottawa ( Background: Nigerian)
- Nana Bediako from Toronto (Background: Ghanaian)
- Style me Ankara from Toronto (Background: Ghanaian)
- Ofuure from Toronto (Background: Nigerian)
- We Are Kings from Ottawa (Background: Nigerian)
