Big Nick: Sudbury’s Newest Superhero

Big Nick: Sudbury's Newest Superhero

What started out as a ‘thank you’ to Graphic Con in 2015 quickly become Expired Comics most requested character! Big Nick is a mine rescue worker turned superhero and Big Nick #2 will launch in June at Graphic Con and we spoke with the creators to find out more about Sudbury’s own superhero!

Tell us a bit about Expired Comics

Expired Comics specialize in creating and publishing comic books and children’s books. Following the success of Big Nick #1 at last year’s Graphic Con and beyond, it looks like Canada wants more Big Nick, so we’ve put together a sequel for the ages! Get ready to laugh, cry and be moved by this literary and artistic slugfest! Big Nick issue 2 will launch at this year’s Graphic Con!

Expired Comics has also gained national and international recognition for their two other comic series, The MorningWood Guardian, which held the #1 selling spot on iTunes/iBooks Canada and Earth’s Finest, which was quoted by AMC’s Comic Book Men’s Ming Chen as being “One of the greatest comic ever created!

Where did you get the idea to create a Big Nick? Describe this comic book character and the storyline.

The character of Big Nick was created as a ‘thank you’ to Graphic Con in 2015 after Expired Comics was invited as special guests. After popular demand, the following year, in 2016 we released Big Nick issue 1 at the Sudbury Graphic Con. The reception was enormous and the comic really hit off, not just in Sudbury, but across Canada! In the last year we have built a pretty substantial fan base as the comic has been selling online and shipping all over Canada.

Big Nick, aka Nick Murray, a mine rescue worker, disappeared during a mine cave in. Thirty years later, he emerged without having aged a single day, and with amazing new powers. Thus far Nick has discovered that he can manipulate the ground and minerals as well as grow to enormous proportions. Big Nick uses Sudbury Ontario’s iconic landmark, The Big Nickel, as his weapon of choice! After the events of emergence day, when a gigantic robotic moose burst from the depths of the earth, Big Nick has been busy keeping Canada safe. Issue #2 starts off with the Sudbury based hero receiving an honorary monument to commemorate his heroic deeds. Little does he know, things are about to hit the fan in epic proportions. Join Big Nick as he faces off against his biggest foe yet, the colossal Bedrock Titan! Where did he come from? Why is he so darn mad? How can Big Nick possibly defeat a living mountain?

Can you tell us a bit about the Big Nick video game that was created at the Sudbury Game Design Challenge?

In January, we were asked if we would allow our character (Big Nick) to be used in a potential video game for the Sudbury Game Design Challenge. To our surprise, Big Nick actually made it into a game! And boy did it not disappoint! The Zombie Rats Spider Bats team did an absolutely stellar job! From their interpretation of Big Nick, to the overall game design, they certainly deserved their 3rd place win and more. In fact, we’ve even included the game as part of one of the pledge tiers in our Kickstarter campaign. Pledge 30$ and not only will you receive a copy of Big Nick #2, but also a downloadable, playable level of the Big Nick game!

You’ve already exceeded your Kickstarter goal – how exciting! Do you have plans for Big Nick #3?

Yes we did, and in so little time! In only 1 week we are currently funded at 147%. And we still have 3 1/2 weeks on our Kickstarter campaign to go! This is totally unexpected. In fact we’ve received pledges from ALL OVER THE WORLD! Altho based out of Sudbury, Big Nick seems to have a global appeal! We certainly have plans for more issues. With the current storyline, we are looking at maybe 1 or 2 more issues, but we have many more stories to tell!

Where can we get a copy of the first Big Nick comic book?

Copies of Big Nick issue 1 are currently available on our website http://www.expiredcomics.com/ as well as in store at Comics North and at the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

There is still time to support their Kickstarter and you can find out more about Expired Comics on their website or follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
