Do you have a favourite memory from Cambrian College?
So many wonderful memories come to mind when I think about the three years I spent studying Public Relations at Cambrian College. One memory that stands out above the rest would be the planning and execution of my first event – The Run-A-Way Fashion Show. A group of us put together a fundraiser in support of the Arthritis Society and The Cambrian Foundation. I also did my first on-air interview with CTV, which was a great experience. It was a lot of work but seeing everything come together the night of the event was an extremely rewarding feeling, and one I will never forget! Of course I also have to mention the amazing relationships that were built with peers and professors over the years, many of which I am still great friends with today!
What inspired you to choose Public Relations at Cambrian College/why should others consider this program?
I chose the Public Relations program mainly because I have always had a passion for writing (even as a kid, I was part of a monthly writing club with my family). I’ve always been very organized (lists, lists, lists!) which proved to be a huge asset while taking the PR program. Once I started the program, it opened my eyes to all of the hats PR professionals could wear and through this I realized my love for event planning and various marketing aspects. Whether its work related or planning for a night out with the girls, I enjoy being the “go to planner”.
If you enjoy writing, marketing, event planning, building relationships and you’re looking for the best hands-on experience, then I highly suggest enrolling in the Public Relations program at Cambrian College!
What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
My career is constantly presenting itself with rewarding and memorable moments. As the Event Coordinator for Northern Ontario Business I execute various award programs within Sudbury and also around the North. We recognize deserving individuals/organizations that go above and beyond their everyday call of duty; it truly doesn’t get much better than that. I’ve had the opportunity to coordinate 12 award galas at this point in my career, all of which have been equally gratifying and heart-warming.
What is something you hope to achieve in your career?
I’m very passionate about the Public Relations program and all that it has to offer. I would love nothing more than to get back to Cambrian College and instill my passion and knowledge into new students by teaching PR courses!
Advice for new PR grads or students who are just entering the program?
Take advantage of the small class settings and the hands-on experience, you won’t get this anywhere else. Get to know your professors and peers (lots of group work throughout the years). Put your best foot forward in everything you do, the saying “you get out what you put in” has never been truer. Even if a class seems irrelevant to the PR working world, trust me, it’s relevant (yes, even accounting…and yes, especially Microsoft Excel). Give your time to the community and volunteer as much as possible, it will be some of the best experiences and will really help to build your resume. Also, spelling and grammar! I can’t stress enough how important this is. One last thing, have fun!
