Emerging Artist Showcase 2019: Presented by Jazz Sudbury

May 30, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$15

Jazz Sudbury’s Emerging Artist Showcase competition is a search for up-and-coming musicians looking to break into Ontario’s festival circuit. Three finalists will each receive $500 and perform in front of a live audience on May 30th at La Fromagerie, where the winner(s) will be chosen and announced. Finalists are also invited to return to the Jazz Sudbury Festival 2019 to participate in a masterclass with a professional touring jazz musician hosted in partnership with Music and Film in Motion.

The Emerging Artist Showcase winner(s) will receive an additional $1,000 prize, one-on-one mentorship provided by Canada’s Music Incubator, and will perform as the opening main-stage act at the Jazz Sudbury Festival, Saturday 7 SEP 2019.

Our finalists are…

The Aguda Collective is made up of current students and graduates from the University of Toronto, Humber College and York University, blending beautiful, interesting melodies with intricate, soulful solos and features all-original material written by trombonist Vonne Aguda. Using their individual voices, the members of The Aguda Collective craft a unique soundscape that communicates truth, emotion, and above all, good music.

Ian McGimpsey Quartet is a collaboration between some of the most swinging and energetic players in Toronto’s young, up and coming generation of jazz musicians. The members collectively cite hard bop and post bop influences from the 50’s through today. With four unique musical voices, the group tackles quintessential standards, bluesy grooves, and inspired originals with an unmistakably hard hitting attitude.

Jenna Marie Pinard is freshly graduated from the University of Toronto’s prestigious jazz studies program, who possesses a signature jazz and blues voice that hints at Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Aretha Franklin, but is distinctly her own. She is best known for her smooth-sounding jazz and rich R&B vocals, her wide vocal range, and passionate performances.
