Sudbury Art Crawl
June 1, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
This year, we will feature sculptor Antonella Rocca. David Wiewel has joined us for every art crawl since we opened, but this year he’s busy working on opening his new café, Café Obscura Sudbury! We wish him the very best on his new venture and will miss him taking in-house portraits!
ARTIST STATEMENT-Antonella Rocca
Antonella Rocca was born in 1984, in Lamezia Terme (Province of Catanzaro – Italian Region of Calabria – South Italy). Currently she lives and works in Sudbury (ON) Canada. In 2002 she obtained a Diploma at Liceo Artistico Statale in Catanzaro and in 2015 was awarded with a Masters’ Degree with specialization in Decoration from “Accademia di Belle Arti” (Art School) of Catanzaro with a final mark of 110 summa cum laude. In 2018, she successfully completed the “General Arts and Science – English for Academic Purpose Program” at Cambrian College in Sudbury-ON. Now, she is enrolled in the “General Business Program” at Cambrian College as international student.
Since 2013 she has been serving as the Chairwoman of the “P-Art”, an Arts and Cultural organization. Between 2014 and 2018 she worked for “MAON” (Museum which collects artworks from Calabrian artists of 19th and 20th centuries) in Cosenza – South Italy. She is promoter of some great Italian and foreign artists like Alberto Burri, Aurelio Amendola, Mario Cresci, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalì, Jannis Kounellis, Gastone Biggi and Mimmo Rotella.
Through her works she breaks up and puts back together material shapes pushing common objects, such as cutlery and other tools, beyond the limits their destination of use binds them to. She makes use of a floating and modular style, able to reactivate the meaning and the memory of stories that have already come to an end.
She has exhibited her artworks, among the others, in the following remarkable displays: Maon, la Collezione (MAON, the Collection) at MAON Museum in Rende (Province of Cosenza) – year 2017; New Entry, le acquisizioni (New Entry, the acquisitions) at MAON Museum in Rende (Province of Cosenza) – year 2017; Parti, Visioni del tutto (Parts, Vision of a whole) at MAON Museum in Rende (Province of Cosenza) – year 2016; Parti, Terre Multiple (Parts, Multifaceted Visions) at the Forum Vittoria – Gallery space in Bologna – year 2016; Parti, Paradigmi di itinerari creativi, (Parts, Paradigms of Creative Itineraries) at the Luigi Di Sarro Documentation Centre for Contemporary Art Research in Rome – year 2016; Stazioni Creative (Stations of Creativity), at the Palazzo dei Nobili in Catanzaro – year 2014; “National Arts Award 10th Edition” at the Margherita Theatre in Bari – year 2013; Zone Scoperte III, Omaggio all’Italia (Unlived-in Spaces 3– A tribute to Italy) at the Provincial government building of Catanzaro – year 2011; Zone Scoperte III Bis (Unlived-in Spaces 3– A tribute to Italy) at the Venanzo Crocetti Museum/Foundation in Rome – year 2012; “Illness and Art – 12th National Congress AIMI-SIMIT” at Magna Grecia University of Catanzaro – year 2010.
In 2014, she won the first prize at “Limen Arte International Prize” in the section sculpture, held at the E. Gagliardi Palace in Vibo Valentia.
