Book Launch – Untold: Northeastern Ontario’s Military Past

October 18, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Art Gallery of Sudbury, 251 John Street
Sudbury, Ontario Canada
+ Google Map

Dieter Buse and Graeme Mount have spent the last few years researching and writing about Northeastern Ontario's military history, bringing the stories of this region's past to life. Come celebrate the release of the first ever compilation of our region's military history. Untold: Northeastern Ontario's Military Past Volume 1, 1662- World War 1 contains rare photos, anecdotes and even writing space to encourage readers to delve into their own family histories. Copies are $22.95. Refreshments served. Admission free. Praise for Untold “A fascinating and much-needed story of the contributions of the people of Northeastern Ontario to the First World War, stories which have never before been told in print. Through diaries, letters, and official records, historians Dieter Buse and Graeme Mount have uncovered everything from heroic deeds to desertions. We learn of the realities of war in Europe, internment closer to home, and the commemorations of war afterwards. Bank clerks, forestry workers, and Indigenous trappers (among others) emerge from the pages as real people who played important roles in the Canadian war effort, and whose stories deserve to be better known.” – Kerry Abel, author of Changing Places: History, Community, and Identity in Northeastern Ontario

Dinner & A Show w/ The Andrew Collins Trio

October 18, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
The Motley Kitchen, 70 Young Street
Sudbury, Ontario Canada
+ Google Map
$25

Three extraordinary musicians, The Andrew Collins Trio will perform at the next Dinner & Show at The Motley Kitchen, Thursday October 18. You may know Andrew Collins, a 5 time JUNO nominee and 7 time Canadian Folk Music Award- winner, through his work with The Foggy Hogtown Boys, the equally mind-bending Creaking Tree String Quartet or the Trio, itself. But you’ll never put a label on him for his wildly inventive approach to folk, newgrass, jazz and chamber-oriented roots music. The trio merges Andrew’s skills on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola, mandocello and smooth vocals with the rich talents of Mike Mezzatesta (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, mandola) and James McEleney (bass, mandocello and vocals). Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck and Newgrass invader, David Grisman. Their new double album, Tongue & Groove has 11 vocal cuts (Tongue) and 11 instrumentals (Groove). It is a fine representation of what the band does best -- spontaneity on stage and rapid-fire, improvisational instrumental exchanges. The Groove CD was just nominated for yet another CFMA for Instrumental Group of the Year. Winners will be announced at the 2018 awards show in Calgary on November 30 and December 1. Dinner and entertainment combined is $60.00 including HST. Show-only seats are $25.00 each. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with the buffet dinner served at 6:30 p.m. and the show approximately from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Reserve now to assure good seats and dinner by calling 705-222-6685. The Motley Kitchen is proud to present this series in collaboration with the Northern Lights Festival Boréal. Le Theatre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO), 21 Lasalle Blvd
Sudbury, Canada
+ Google Map

Deep in the Nevada desert, where a lone poplar tree stands tall, its branches laden with shoes. Alexandra, usually so sedentary, is travelling across America to stand before that tree. It bears witness to the passage of travellers, transforming their shoes into bits of eternity. Above all, the road leads to Jack. Her grandfather, the tireless traveller, has been everywhere, except in her life. Along the way, she meets people who guide her, in the footsteps of her ancestor, on a journey of self-discovery.
