Film: Free Solo

March 17, 2019 @ 1:45 pm - 3:00 pm
Sudbury Indie Cinema Downtown, 40 Elm Street
Sudbur, Ontario Canada

Follow Alex Honnold as he becomes the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite's 3,000 ft high El Capitan wall. With no ropes or safety gear, he completed arguably the greatest feat in rock climbing history. "I did not suffer too much vertigo while watching 'Free Solo,' a gripping documentary about Alex Honnold, a celebrated climber who rather frequently goes up cliff faces thousands of feet high without any climbing equipment. It’s just him, his hands and feet, and a little pouch hanging from his belt, which contains powder that dries his hands to enable him to grasp on to the rock face better. While the high vistas shot by filmmakers Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi are indeed potentially dizzying, I spent less time looking at those than I did looking at Honnold, hanging on an entirely vertical surface, and saying, perhaps a bit too loudly in the screening room, “Will you get off of there … ”" -Glenn Kenny 'rogerebert.com'

March 17, 2019 @ 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Townehouse Tavern, 206 Elgin Street
Sudbury, Canada

Welcome 2019 ... Our Sunday Afternoons have been great this year... Richard Mende and Paul Loewenberg take a couple hours to play old Blues, Ragtime, Bluegrass, Gospel with a touch of Folk music. About half the time we have special guests join in on Bass or Fiddle or Dobro or Banjo... but the rest of the time it's 2 music encyclopedias playing the best from 1800 to about 1960. More often is the 1920's and 30's. We love it when the kids dance. Bring the kids, bring your parents... meet your friends. Have a great meal... One last afternoon of peace and good music for the season. We are back in January with more Fats Waller, Mississippi Sheiks, Hank Williams, Bob Wills, The Carter Family and more. If you are a player and want to get in on the kitchen jam... come and talk to us...

Fagroongala is a Celtic trio who compose, arrange, and perform original and traditional music from Canada and the UK, in both French and English. To reveal the depth and contrast of emotions in lyrics as well as instrumental music, the band’s repertoire draws not only from Celtic roots but also classical music, funk, and other popular styles. Fagroongala's songs, many of which predate Canadian confederation, are adapted with modern instrumentation, rhythms and harmony. www.fagroongala.com
