The Vast Depths by Kelly Barbosa
The Northern Artist Gallery is thrilled to announce that the exhibit for the month of May will be artist Kelly Barbosa. The exhibit will showcase her love for oceanic creatures and can be viewed at Artists on Elgin from May 1-31. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Saturday May 11th from 1pm to 4pm to meet the artist. Kelly Barbosa has always felt a love for the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. Kelly’s work is a unique blend of painting and relief sculpture as she carves creatures out of MDF (multi-density fibreboard) and finishes them with acrylic paint. Kelly wants to bring a splash of the ocean to the inland of Northern Ontario using vivid hues and bold stylization. In this display of oceanic creatures, you will experience divergent species represented with vibrant hues, bold lines and distinct texture. Come and explore the vast depths.

Friday, May 10th – Lost Cousins, Pop Machine - $7.00 at the door The motions and experiences that define who you are, or who you will be, are constantly in flux. They can appear as emotional and existential queries; doubts or thoughts about your place in the world. For the indie psych rock outfit Lost Cousins, grappling with life transitions—and the domino effects of those choices—is at the core of their sprawling, celestial-sounding debut LP. Cam Duffin (drums), Lloyd McArton (guitar, saxophone), and Thomas Dashney (keyboards) met at University, where their dedication to their craft and sound was inherent from the start. Each of the band’s members has a history with music; beginning as kids learning piano or guitar, pursuing those instruments fervently, or as a jumping off point to explore the vastness music has to offer. With postsecondary life as a catalyst, their depth would grow: they were inspired by the opportunities provided by a thriving music scene, and eventually came together as musicians rigorously learning pop and rock tracks for a covers troupe. The chemistry was apparent immediately, driving the group to write and perform original music together. This diligence in honing their performance is key to the group’s overall narrative and spirit. Pop Mach!ne is a 5 piece classic rock and original band from Lively, Ontario. It was created with the Lively Intermediate Rock Band and the Soda Pops in mind, two bands consisting of some of the band members that are now in Pop Mach!ne.

Celebrating 100 years of Al Purdy
This is a ticketed fundraising event. Tickets $15 each. This year marks what would have been Al Purdy's 100th birthday. Join us for a special fundraising screening of Al Purdy was Here followed by an after party - a celebration of Al Purdy and his work - at the Alibi Room at 113 Durham Street in Downtown Sudbury. What does it take to carve out a career as a poet? Why on earth would anyone attempt it? Al Purdy Was Here is the portrait of an artist driven to become a great Canadian poet at a time when the category barely existed. Al Purdy is a charismatic tower of contradictions: a “sensitive man” who whips out a poem in a bar fight; a factory worker who finds grace in an Arctic flower; a mentor to young writers who remained a stranger to his sons. Purdy has been called the last, best and most Canadian poet. “Voice of the Land” is engraved on his tombstone. But before finding fame as the country’s unofficial poet laureate, he endured years of poverty and failure. Born in Wooler, Ontario in 1918, Al was a high-school dropout who hopped freight trains during the Great Depression. He lived all over the country, working in mattress factories. After two decades of writing what he admits was bad poetry, in 1957 he and his wife build an A-frame cabin on Roblin Lake in Ontario’s Prince Edward County. There he finds his voice, and surprising success. The A-frame soon becomes a mecca for the early pioneers of Canadian literature, writers like Margaret Laurence, Dennis Lee, Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje. And in this rustic salon, irrigated by Al’s wild grape wine, a cultural community takes root. Now, 15 years after Purdy’s death, artists and patrons have rallied to restore...
