Looking to get your feet wet when it comes to programming, then this is the workshop for you. HTML and CSS are the backbone of all websites, and knowledge of them is a necessity if you are interested in things like web development, creating marketing emails, or even blogging! The web without HTML and CSS would be would be a world without colourful, pretty websites, not to mention the web applications we all use daily. It’s easy to learn, and was designed so that everyone - even non-programmers - can do it. No fancy programs are needed, just a text editor and a web browser! The Teens Learning Code Introduction to HTML & CSS workshop is designed to be a hands-on experience. During the session, you'll build something like this and learn the following: - Basic techniques and concepts that are translatable to other programming languages - The building blocks of how HTML and CSS work together to create richer online experiences - How to create a website with images, video, and a CSS-defined layout - How to create a beautiful multi-page website Prerequisites: None! Canada has become a major leader in the video game industry, yet, like most technology, only a small percentage of games are built by women. In this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop, you will create a game, quiz, or interactive story using HTML & CSS that's centred on a case, community, or message that you care about while learning critical coding skills. Kids (9-12 yrs) – Graphic Design with Canva & Scratch

Whether it’s in books, on billboards, or even on our food labels, graphic design is everywhere! In this hands-on learning experience, learners will be introduced to application called Canva, an online graphic design application that helps designers create beautiful work. Learners with an artistic and creative passion will love exploring their skills in a technological way, and will get to discuss how their favourite logos and images were designed and created! By the end of the workshop, learners will have discovered how to compose elements in visually engaging ways, and experiment with typography and colour theory. Canva’s easy-to-use interface will also encourage them to continue designing outside of the workshop. You will learn how to - Create algorithms in Scratch - Use colour to communicate an emotion or idea - Use symmetry to create balance in my design - Use events to control when things happen in my project - Use loops to make things happen more than once - Use Canva to keep designing, and Scratch to KEEP CODING! Join Barbara Coloroso, internationally renowned expert and best-selling author on the subjects of parenting, teaching discipline, bullying, and conflict resolution. She is the next speaker in the Parents as Career Coaches lecture series, and she’ll be in Sudbury talking about how to help your children manage transitions in their lives. Joining Barbara Coloroso will be Catherine Poulton, Cambrian’s Wellness Coordinator. Catherine is a Certified Resilience Trainer, and certified in Applied Positive Psychology. Under Catherine’s leadership as Wellness Coordinator, Cambrian has created a culture of wellness on campus, based on eight pillars: social, intellectual, financial, emotional, spiritual, career, physical, and environmental. 20th Annual WISE Science and Engineering Olympics

Are you a girl in Grades 4-7 with a budding love of Science and Engineering? Then join us for the 20th Annual WISE Science and Engineering Olympics. The Olympics are a fun, FREE, full day event for 120 girls in Grades 4 to 7 from Sudbury and surrounding areas. Working in small teams of approximately 5-6 members, students will participate in four separate hands-on experiments from various science and engineering disciplines. Each experiment has its own scoring criteria, based on teamwork, member participation, planning, documentation, ingenuity, creativity, etc. The objective is to present science and engineering to these students in an interesting, fun, stimulating and positive way. At the end of the event, all participants will receive a certificate of participation and medals will be awarded to members of the winning teams. The Olympics start at 9:00 am until 3:30 pm; thanks to our generous sponsors, the event is free and includes a pizza lunch and a snack for all participants. Students requiring a special meal should bring their lunch at drop-off with instructions. This event is part of WISE Sudbury’s continuing efforts to promote and encourage females to consider and pursue careers in science and engineering. Girls Learning Code Day

Entrepreneurs are creative problem-solvers. They are always looking for ways to help others and make experiences better, easier, and more enjoyable for everyone. Inspire an entrepreneurial spirit in your young learner through this collaborative learning experience, where participants work together to bring their creative imaginings to life! During this workshop, participants will work in teams to choose a problem they’d like to solve, then brainstorm a startup idea together. Each team will ideate a solution to their problem, then create an online presence for their startup, where they can share their innovative ideas with others. Learners will work together to remix or code their website from scratch in HTML & CSS. We’ll use Glitch to collaborate on our sites and share them with others. At the end of the experience, each team will have a chance to share what they learned, and pitch their ideas to the group. Learners will also leave with a link to their working website, which they can share with family and friends.

This talk will explore our current understanding of common myths, risks and misconceptions around cannabis. Dr. Marks de Chabris is a Sudbury based physician with a practice focused in Pain Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Graduating from McGill University Medical School in 1988 he was certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada in Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine. In 2009 he concentrated his practice in Pain Medicine and Addiction Medicine as was given Focused Practice Designation by the Ontario Medical Association. Kids Learning Code is excited to combine the power of play with basic design and programming skills in this hands-on workshop. This experience offers learners the opportunity to create their very own digital games in a super fun environment. Using Scratch, a beginner level programming environment, imagination will come to life in a new and digitally engaging form. Learners will also be introduced to Scratch's amazing online community, sloganed: "Imagine, Program, Share," where they will have the opportunity to upload their game for anyone on the web to download and play! At the end of the workshop, each learner will also have a chance to beta test their game with their peers. Each Gamemaking with Scratch workshop has the same flow, but different activities.
