Sudbury Downtown Indie Cinema Co-op is delighted to announce our inaugural edition of Junction North International Documentary Film Festival, Thursday November 9 to Sunday November 12, at various venues in Downtown Sudbury. This is possible due to the support of Government Partners: Ontario Arts Council and The Ontario Seniors Secretariat, Major Presenting Partners: Downtown Sudbury, Greater Sudbury Public Library, Imagine Cinemas as well as our Major Media Sponsor CBC Radio. Junction North brings 30+ screenings over 4 days to Northern Ontario of the year's outstanding stories from Toronto’s Hot Docs International Film Festival, TIFF, and Sundance, plus a variety of local stories, an industry forum for Northern Ontario emerging doc filmmakers, and school screenings.

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour – Sudbury 2017

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is coming back to Sudbury, Ontario!! This amazing festival features picturesque films from outdoor adventurers all over the world. Door prizes and raffles will be held by the Laurentian University Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program. NEW THIS YEAR: -New location! This year's event will be held at the All Nations Church, located at 414 St. Raphael St. Sudbury, ON. 450 seats per night, and free parking! -2 Days! This year's event will take place on January 26th AND January 27th. Each evening will have DIFFERENT movies playing. Our Guests of Honour at this 2018 Edition of WIFW's International Women's Day Screenings will be the Organizers & Volunteers of Walking With Our Sisters Sudbury. Our film programme is a series of new works by outstanding Indigenous women filmmakers. New work by Darlene Naponse, Michelle Latimer, Jules Koostaschin, Michelle Derosier... She Is Water 13 min. WomenInFilmWednesday Series: NOVITIATE

#WomenInFilmWednesday is monthly film series which showcases the recent work of female directors. We screen the 3rd Wednesday of every month from different venues in downtown Sudbury. A portion of ticket sales is donated to local women's organizations. Tickets available at the door for $15 cash. Advance sales end 4pm day of screening. NOVITIATE Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) oversees a bevy of up-and-coming female actors in this drama about aspiring nuns at an isolated Catholic school in 1964, who are forced to re-examine their faith and their calling in light of the liberal reforms of Vatican II. "It was… peaceful," is how Cathleen (Margaret Qualley) describes her first experience of church to her agnostic mother (Julianne Nicholson). Cathleen's home life is seldom peaceful, but in the church and God, she finds the love that she is missing. Further entranced by the nuns at her school, Cathleen announces at 17 that she's "in love" and entering the convent. There she finds a harsh environment of devotion, the strict hand of the Reverend Mother, and the companionship of other girls similarly eager to show their love for God. A coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of Vatican II and the massive reforms to the Catholic Church in the 1960s, Novitiate is a stirring exploration about women finding themselves, their faith, and their passions beyond religion. The film is host to a remarkable cast of young actors portraying the novices preparing for life as nuns. Melissa Leo gives one of the year's strongest performances. Her Reverend Mother is boiling rage underneath her vestments, angry at the changing church and its disrespect to the women who have devoted their lives to it. Documentary Screening

The Sudbury Psychedelic Society will be hosting a documentary screening at the Greater Sudbury Public Library, of the Canadian film 'Neurons to Nirvana'. This film explores past and present psychedelic research, underlining the potential use of psychedelic substances in modern medicine. Food and refreshments will be provided throughout the event. After the film, there will also be time for a discussion on the current direction of psychedelic research, and suggestions will be welcome for future events. This event is FREE and everyone is welcome to come and learn more, and/or contribute to the growing conversation around psychedelic substances.
