UP HERE: ESG / Hubert Lenoir / Pale Lips

The Grand 23 Elgin Street, Sudbury

Don't miss ESG's last Canadian show ever at Up Here 5! The New York no-wave legends will be sharing the stage with Québecois sensation Hubert Lenoir and Pale Lips. Presented by Downtown Sudbury. ESG You know ESG even if you don’t know you know these underlooked influencers of everything from punk and art rock to funk and hip-hop. They have one of the most sampled songs in history, snagged by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., J. Dilla, Liars and at least 400 others. Formed in the Bronx 40-some years ago by three sisters and a few friends, ESG have released five albums since. Their minimalist, funk-inspired post-punk was inspired by James Brown and the Latin rhymthms spilling in from their childhood streets. Their tunes are equally at home on the dance floor as they were in the cheeky no wave scene of the late ’70s. Today, their sparse, raw, percussion-led sound continues to inspire and influence new generations. HUBERT LENOIR The self-proclaimed “French-Canadian nightmare” Hubert Lenoir blends glam-rock, pop, R&B and soul. His first album Darlène is a “postmodern opera about the coming of age of a generation.” He is a messenger of a new era, free and uncontained by any and all “norms.” PALE LIPS Delivering a satisfying mix of poppy, rock ’n’ roll anthems with a pinch of punk attitude, Pale Lips have set themselves apart as a four-piece that always delivers a good time. Looks like the Runaways, smells like the Ramones, tastes like Chuck Berry ... Hey, look what I almost stepped in! It's the Pale Lips, from Montréal! TICKETS / All-Ages 30$ advance / 35$ at the door Free for children 12 and under. uphere.com/tickets UP HERE Up Here is an urban art & emerging music festival in weird and wonderful downtown Sudbury that takes place...

UP HERE 5: Fet.Nat / Andy California / Camilla Sparksss

Townehouse Tavern 206 Elgin Street, Sudbury, Canada

Weirdos unite! This might be the most eclectic triple-bill we've ever booked and you'll love it. Presented by Stack Brewing. FET.NAT Born of the hotbed of Hull and Ottawa’s experimental scene in 2010, FET.NAT are a force to be reckoned with. FET.NAT is a gang of prodigious musicians that kidnapped a pissed off french slam poet. Their music can sound utterly disorganized at times but is always in control, bending space and time with elastic rhythms. By mixing free jazz, noise, krautrock, punk and even Créole and Afro-beat influences, FET.NAT is a ludique quartet that is always looking for novelty in their creation. CAMILLA SPARKSSS Barbara Lehnhoff (artistic alias Camilla Sparksss) is a Swiss-Canadian singer, songwriter, musician and visual artist. She was born in 1983 on a frigid, -27⁰ Celcius December day in Kenora, a small town on Lake Superior. She had a pet bear as a child and, yes, her father flew a float plane. She is know based in Switzerland. Her work is a collage of experimental, lo-fi electronic pop and melodic genre mashups performed with turntables, fat synthesizers and cutting vocals. ANDY CALIFORNIA Andy California is the last true savior of rock ’n’ roll. Along with a fist full of others who were actually there for, and brought up on, 20th century noise, he’s an essential and spiritual component of the great force of primal, rhythmic skronk, and possibly the only man left with the sincerity and inalienable right to deliver it. TICKETS / 19+ 15$ advance / 20$ at the door uphere.com/tickets UP HERE Up Here is an urban art & emerging music festival in weird and wonderful downtown Sudbury that takes place from August 16-18, 2019. UP HERE: Milk & Bone / Lydia Ainsworth / Jennifer Holub

The Grand 23 Elgin Street, Sudbury

Milk & Bone are coming to Northern Ontario for the first time ever to cap off Up Here 5! Opening acts to be announced tomorrow! Presented by Downtown Sudbury. MILK & BONE Montréal’s Milk & Bone create melodies that are both dreamy and harrowing. Made up of electronic textures and layered synths, the duo’s sonic universe distinguishes itself from the electro-pop genre with their perfectly-paired vocal colours. Their sophomore album, Deception Bay was released in 2018 and won them the Juno for best electronic album of the year. LYDIA AINSWORTH Lydia Ainsworth has been making waves since the release of her latest album last month. She sings from three perspectives: herself, Mother Nature, and Greek Chorus, taking the listener on a journey. Living in the lush and complex dream world almost entirely on her own, she creates the kind of bewitching pop that you'd swear soundtracked your dreams. JENNIFER HOLUB Teacher-turned-songstress, Jennifer Holub is teaching us all what modern folk can sound like. Equally comfortable singing as on guitar and keys, her haunting melodies tell bittersweet tales set in Northern Ontario. Her new album “The Reckoning” is a hawkish condemnation of society’s place for women, and an urgent call to rouse from it. The Grand 23 Elgin Street, Sudbury

The party ain't over until it's over. After an 8 year break, Les Breastfeeders are back and they will close off Up Here 5. Presented by Stack Brewing. LES BREASTFEEDERS After a long break, Les Breastfeeders are back for the first time since 2011. Established as one of Montreal’s most ferocious rock ‘n’ roll acts, Les Breastfeeders have been lighting up bars, venues and festivals everywhere for almost two decades. Les Breastfeeders not only distinguish themselves with their dazzling guitars and catchy choruses, they also wield the pen like no other french-speaking rock ‘n’ rollers. Thanks to their raw songwriting and sophisticated lyrics, the energetic garage rock sextet will have you questioning everything while dancing the night away.
