Craftivism Night- Welcome Blanket Project

Sew Local Stitch Lounge 1165 Atlee Avenue, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

The proposed border wall between the United States and Mexico is almost 2000 miles long. Imagine if the massive distance of this wall was re-conceptualized and re-contextualized not to divide, but to include. Instead of wall, a concrete line, to keep people out, what if lines of yarn became 3,500,640 yards of blankets to welcome people in? The Welcome Blanket project was started by Jayna Zweiman, cofounder of the Pussyhat Project. Let's show our U.S. neighbours some solidarity and join in on the Welcome Blanket project. Join us to make a welcome blanket for a new immigrant to the United States. Let’s build a project of inclusion together! Welcome Blanket allows us to connect locally and build positive community— and share this connection nationally and globally. A welcome blanket is traditionally created to lovingly mark the arrival of a new person into the world. In the Welcome Blanket project, each handmade blanket is a physical manifestation of this celebration of new refugees and other immigrants: “Welcome to the United States and your new life here! We are so glad you have arrived.” The blankets you make, along with your enclosed notes, will be displayed together in an inaugural show at the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago until December 17. After the show's close, the blanket packages will be distributed to refugees and other immigrants through resettlement organizations. The Smart Museum catalogues the blanket and the note, and posts it to our website www.welcomeblanket.org/gallery so we can watch the distance of inclusion grow! When: Monday, September 11 and Monday, October 2, 6-8pm Cost: $5- will be used to help pay postage to ship the blanket(s). Supplies: Please bring 1 or 2 colours of washable (super wool or acrylic) bulky weight yarn and size 8mm/US11 straight needles or we will...

Essential Oils “Green & Clean”

Greater Sudbury Public Library - South End 191 Regent Street, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

As a parent, I've learned (the hard way sometimes) that being prepared is half the battle. I know that many of you would be very interested in making healthier, more natural choices if only it was quick, easy and affordable. I have always loved natural options, essential oils, saving money and diy projects. Now I'd like to share some of what I've learned, and some new things, with you. So, what are our options as parents to support healthy immune systems, focus and concentration, positive moods and good sleep patterns? For my family, we turn to essential oils as our first and primary option. My kids have learned to ask "mom, is there an oil I can use for ...?". Now that they're a bit older, they'll even text me when I'm out so I can check my app and report back. They know where the oil kit is and how to use them. They even take oils to camp, sleepovers and to school when they need them. Once you know some basics that are safe for kids, you can equip them to take a more active role in their own wellbeing too. If you would like to learn more about how to keep your family clean and healthy while reducing harmful chemicals in your home and environment, please join me for this FREE class. Please bring a friend. If you or your friends aren't available on these dates, why not host a class? It's fun, informative and a great way to learn, grow and support one another.
