Book Launch: Unsolved Sudbury

Little Montreal 182 Elgin Street, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

You're Invited! Have a taste for unsolved crime with a paranormal twist? Meet local author, Sarah May, and purchase your own signed copy of her new book "Unsolved Sudbury: Missing. Murdered. Unexplained." Sudbury has a sordid past of unsolved crime. Our missing and murdered women matter. If we forget their stories, their faces become a memory. Pam Harvey- After her boyfriend Leonard Daoust committed murder, Pam disappeared from her Lloyd Street apartment. She left her four year old son and all her personal belongings behind. She has not made any contact with her family in 40 years. Meagan Pilon- A troubled teen who went missing from downtown Sudbury in 2013 had been spotted for at least a year after her disappearance. Her father anxiously awaits news of his daughter’s five year absence. Renee Sweeney- Who killed Renee Sweeney? Was her vicious murder a botched robbery, or a premeditated attack? Jane Smith- When Jane came home from her afternoon shift at Canadian Tire, she phoned her fiancé and invited him over to visit. She was last seen standing in her apartment doorway at 2 AM the next morning. There was no sign of a struggle. Jane left her luggage and money in her bedroom. Ashley Jalbert- A month before her suspicious death, Ashley confided in her diary that the men who trafficked her would find a way to end her life. Was Ashley’s death really an overdose, or did her past come back to haunt her? Find these stories and other chilling true crime in Unsolved Sudbury: Missing. Murdered. Unexplained. The launch will be hosted at the Little Montreal Bar and Grill 182 Elgin Street Downtown Sudbury. Thursday, March 7, 2019. Free event. Light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be provided.

Bloom 2019

#Bloom2019 is a new, multi-venue music festival taking place in downtown Sudbury. It is dedicated to presenting many styles of exciting music, with roots all over the world - it's a musical world party! Bombino • Shad • Kobo Town • Pierre Kwenders • The Battle of Santiago • Mehdi Cayenne • Greyson Gritt • The Young Novelists • Marc Nadjiwan • Chippy Nonstop • Gurpreet Chana :: The Tabla Guy • LAL • JUMPLE • Oonga • Catherine Taddo • Marc Meriläinen • + a few surprise artists & pop-up shows • FULL SCHEDULE: nlfb.ca/bloom/schedule • PASSES: nlfb.ca/bloom --------------------------------------------------------- SUDBURY, ON, January 16: BLOOM 2019 ANNOUNCES ITS FULL LINE-UP Northern Lights Festival Boréal has already announced West African guitar hero Bombino as a headliner. Since the last announcement, he has become the first Nigerien artist to be Grammy nominated. Just another of many reasons to check out his infectious Tuareg desert blues-rock-groove. Juno nominated hip-hop innovator Shad was also announced as a co-headliner. Both will play The Grand on March 8th, along with The Battle of Santiago. Concert tickets are now available. 2018 Juno winners Kobo Town will join the lineup. They create an infectious blend of witty social commentary, calypso, dancehall reggae and trombone-heavy brass. Fronted by émigré Trinidadian songwriter Drew Gonsalves, Kobo Town have been a repeat favourite at NLFB’s summer festival. Ottawa’s Mehdi Cayenne has an impressive repertoire of post-punk songs that blend world, pop, folk rock and funk in his very particular way. His lyrical (and often theatrical) brand of francophone rock has already blown away Sudbury crowds, and Bloom 2019 is thrilled to welcome him back to the Nickel City. Award winning First Nations rock band NADJIWAN will also perform, celebrating 25 years together. One of Canada’s most sought after tabla players, Gurpreet Chana,...

Bloom 2019: Bombino, Shad & The Battle of Santiago

The Grand 23 Elgin Street, Sudbury

You do not want to miss Bloom 2019's headlining show featuring Grammy nominated, West African guitar legend Bombino; Juno winning, hip-hop innovator Shad; & Afro-Cuban, post-rock groove machine The Battle of Santiago. This show is ALL AGES (minors accompanied) Tickets: www.nlfb.ca/tickets Full schedule: www.nlfb.ca/bloom/schedule Bombino: Home. Where the heart is. For Bombino and most other Tuareg, there’s only one place that can be. In recent years, the rest of the world has largely written off that home as a hot and savage wasteland, a bolt hole for religious extremists and terrorists, a geopolitical video nasty with little to offer apart from the oil, gold and phosphates that lie beneath its soil. But Bombino would like us to take a closer look and think again. His electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré as well as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page. Bombino was recently the first Nigerien to be nominated Grammy. Shad: If you boil down Shad’s trajectory as a hip-hop artist up to this point, it all comes down to love. At a show, his people stare up at him with unconditional amounts of the stuff and he has used his platform as a rapper, a musician, and a writer, to search for and highlight all the love this hard world has to offer. Shad’s family settled in London, Ontario after fleeing the Rwandan genocide. He came up like a lot of first generation Canadian kids, with this cultural duality and the sense that this good country had some baggage that he’d have to unpack some day. He has released five solo albums: 2005’s When This Is Over; 2007’s The Old Prince; 2010’s TSOL; 2013’s Flying Colours; and 2018’s A Short...
