Dinner & A Show w/ The Andrew Collins Trio

The Motley Kitchen 70 Young Street, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Three extraordinary musicians, The Andrew Collins Trio will perform at the next Dinner & Show at The Motley Kitchen, Thursday October 18. You may know Andrew Collins, a 5 time JUNO nominee and 7 time Canadian Folk Music Award- winner, through his work with The Foggy Hogtown Boys, the equally mind-bending Creaking Tree String Quartet or the Trio, itself. But you’ll never put a label on him for his wildly inventive approach to folk, newgrass, jazz and chamber-oriented roots music. The trio merges Andrew’s skills on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola, mandocello and smooth vocals with the rich talents of Mike Mezzatesta (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, mandola) and James McEleney (bass, mandocello and vocals). Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck and Newgrass invader, David Grisman. Their new double album, Tongue & Groove has 11 vocal cuts (Tongue) and 11 instrumentals (Groove). It is a fine representation of what the band does best -- spontaneity on stage and rapid-fire, improvisational instrumental exchanges. The Groove CD was just nominated for yet another CFMA for Instrumental Group of the Year. Winners will be announced at the 2018 awards show in Calgary on November 30 and December 1. Dinner and entertainment combined is $60.00 including HST. Show-only seats are $25.00 each. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with the buffet dinner served at 6:30 p.m. and the show approximately from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Reserve now to assure good seats and dinner by calling 705-222-6685. The Motley Kitchen is proud to present this series in collaboration with the Northern Lights Festival Boréal. Jack

Deep in the Nevada desert, where a lone poplar tree stands tall, its branches laden with shoes. Alexandra, usually so sedentary, is travelling across America to stand before that tree. It bears witness to the passage of travellers, transforming their shoes into bits of eternity. Above all, the road leads to Jack. Her grandfather, the tireless traveller, has been everywhere, except in her life. Along the way, she meets people who guide her, in the footsteps of her ancestor, on a journey of self-discovery. Walk Strut Dance

Zen Fitness 158 Durham Street, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

BACK. TO. BASICS. Like learning to crawl before we learn to walk, the art of the runway style strut has a lot more going on than putting one foot in front of the other. Sky is here to break down the technique of walking toe-ball-heel, crossing your midline and extending your step past your toes to coordinate longer looking lines and smoother flowing movement! FOUNDATIONS FOR BEGINNERS! Sky knows how to put the FUN in fundamental! ;) Sky Slywchuk #HeelsWithSky Sky Slywchuk's beginner-open level High Heels dance class is Wednesdays 8-9 at Zen and is suitable for anyone new to dancing in high heels, or new to dance in general. The class can be taken with or without shoes. Sky's practical approach to dancing helps demystify the process and he specializes in making the movement feel accessible to anyone. The class provides the opportunity for any and everyone to get a feel for the technique of walking toe-ball-heel, runway style struts, pivots, bevels and subtle weight transfers in high heel or platform shoes. The class begins with a warm up that is thorough and progressive, including cardio, mobilization, grooves and stretch, effectively preparing you head to toe for a full-bodied experience. Next is learning choreography, with musical selections tending to be more urban, but Sky regularly takes requests and actively switches up the song styles. Sky is a one of a kind instructor with an authentic style that is unique to him, combining street-jazz with influences of voguing, waacking, hip-hop, jazz and floor work. Sky's choreography is at once urban, lyrical, musical and dynamic. He prides himself on offering fresh material that doesn't feel like anyone else's whilst playing with both masculine & feminine movement qualities. It's important to Sky to always be striving to instill versatility and encourage adaptability...

Oh Susanna w/ Slow Leaves- Oct 19th

Townehouse Tavern 206 Elgin Street, Sudbury, Canada

Oh Susanna This Canadian songstress has a voice that can pierce a heart of stone. Her superbly crafted songs often tell stories of troubled souls who rebel against their circumstances to attain a quiet dignity. These are tales of longing and love, of small town joys and pains, of our simple feelings and strong passions. These are tales that look into our beautifully flawed human hearts. Performing since 1996, Oh Susanna has released eight critically acclaimed albums. She is the recipient of a Genie Award for Best Original Song and a Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. She has also been nominated for two Juno Awards each for Best Roots and Traditional Album of the Year, as well as two Canadian Folk Music Awards for Best Solo Performer and for Best Contemporary Singer of the Year. This year she released A Girl in Teen City, an album of songs set in 1980s Vancouver starring a teenage punk girl named Suzie. The album has been met with high critical acclaim and has earned three Canadian Folk Music Award nominations: English Songwriter of the Year, Contemporary Singer of the Year, and Producer of the Year. Oh Susanna lives in Toronto with her husband and son. Slow Leaves Slow Leaves is the project of Winnipeg songwriter Grant Davidson. Davidson’s latest record, the self-produced Enough About Me, marks his fifth studio album and second under the moniker Slow Leaves. His most forthright album to date finds him reflecting on an ordinary life where meaning is invented and comfort is found in the realization that there are no answers. Joined by Jason Tait (Bahamas), Rusty Matyas (Imaginary Cities), and Julie Penner (Do Make Say Think), the ten track album represents an honest distillation of his influences while acknowledging, as the self-referential...
