Dining in the Dark

Ristorante Verdicchio 1351 Kelly Lake Road, Sudbury, Sudbury, Canada

You're invited to ignite your senses! Smell. Taste. Touch. It’s not unusual to close your eyes and savour a bite of your favourite dish... but have you ever consumed an entire meal that way – replacing sight with touch, taste and texture? Based on a restaurant concept popularized in Paris and New York, Dining in the Dark is a signature CNIB event where diners experience a meal without the use of their sight. Participants wear blindfolds for a unique, sensory experience in which they can explore their meal in a whole new way! Through your support and participation, this event will provide much-needed funding to provide accessible technology to people who are blind or partially sighted in the Sudbury community. Please join us for an unforgettable night of sensory exploration through aromas, flavours and textures. Cost: Tickets are $75 per person. Three-course meal, entertainment, and silent auction included. Purchase tickets at www.cnib.ca/DiningintheDarkSudbury For more information, please contact Devin Shyminsky. Film: Cold War

Sudbury Indie Cinema Downtown 40 Elm Street, Sudbur, Ontario, Canada

In the 1950s, a music director falls in love with a singer and tries to persuade her to flee communist Poland for France. "An aching film on such exquisite pains of impossible love, Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Cold War” concurrently swells your heart and breaks it, just like the sore memory of a lover that drifted away from your life, or an intensely craved kiss that never was. It’s a tale with the makings of legendary sagas, following the union and break-up (and union and break-up again and again) of Wiktor and Zula, a classically gorgeous couple from the opposite sides of the tracks. They first meet deep in the dilapidated countryside of the post-World War II Poland. They exchange suggestive glances and embark on a stormy affair that disastrously evolves over two isolating decades and numerous unsympathetic locales across Europe.” -Tomris Laffly 'rogerebert.com'

The Wooden Sky, Casper Skulls

Townehouse Tavern 206 Elgin Street, Sudbury, Canada

Friday, March 29th Tickets on Sale Friday, January 11th. $15 +tax in advance, $20 at the door http://www.thewoodenskymusic.com https://casperskulls.bandcamp.com Swimming in Strange Waters is The Wooden Sky’s fifth album. The Indie Rock band has been a favourite across Canada for the last 10 years. The band (made up of Gardiner, multi-instrumentalists Simon Walker and Andrew Wyatt, violinist Edwin Huizinga and drummer Andrew Kekewich) started writing and recording demos in a small farmhouse in rural Quebec in January 2015, but then put them aside as they embarked on a year-long tour in support of their previous album, Let’s Be Ready. When they resumed work on the album in March 2016, Gardiner says the band caught a severe case of “demoitis”, a condition wherein “you fall in love with the scrappiness of the demos.” So rather than completely re-working them, they decided to record the album in the same way as the demos: in Gardiner’s home studio, using old tape machines and live off the floor. The resulting album is a sonic maelstrom that sees the band exploring unchartered waters, where textural psychedelia inspired by the Paisley Underground movement melds into quiet, acoustic cyclical guitar melodies, before once again transforming into a bombastic, Johnny Cash-esque rally against the XL Keystone pipeline in Canada. While Let’s Be Ready found the Wooden Sky writing a pure “rock and roll” album, Swimming in Strange Waters sees the band experimenting once again. “I feel like we’re back on track,” says Gardiner. On every album, the Wooden Sky’s aim is to somehow capture the band’s live performance, to compress that adrenalin and vigour into a collection of songs that’ll inevitably be played through headphones and crappy computer speakers. It’s a tall order, considering the Wooden Sky has become known for both high-energy, sold-out rock shows and their...

Film: The Women Who Loves Giraffes

Sudbury Indie Cinema Downtown 40 Elm Street, Sudbur, Ontario, Canada

In 1956, four years before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and seven years before Dian Fossey left to work with mountain gorillas, in fact, before anyone, man or woman had made such a trip, 23-year old Canadian biologist, Anne Innis Dagg, made an unprecedented solo journey to South Africa to become the first person in the world to study animal behavior in the wild on that continent. When she returned home a year later armed with ground-breaking research, the insurmountable barriers she faced as a female scientist proved much harder to overcome. In 1972, having published 20 research papers as an assistant professor of zoology at University of Guelph, the Dean of the university, denied her tenure. She couldn't apply to the University of Waterloo because the Dean there told Anne that he would never give tenure to a married woman. This was the catalyst that transformed Anne into a feminist activist. For three decades, Anne Innis Dagg was absent from the giraffe world until 2010 when she was sought out by giraffologists and not just brought back to into the fold, but finally celebrated for her work.
