UP HERE 4: Tommy and the Commies (Release) / Priors / Ghost Cat

The Durham Social 82 Durham Street, Sudbury, Canada

Here Come Tommy and the Commies! Let's kick-off the festival with good ol' all-ages punk show. It's a record release. It's a party. It's one hell of a way to get this festival started. Enter through the back alley and make your way up to the Durham Hall. TOMMY AND THE COMMIES (Record Release!) If all the greats of power pop got together and raised a boy-child, the result would be Tommy. He’s joined in this endeavour by the hurtin’ boys: the Houle brothers, who play in every single punk band to come out of Sudbury. Tommy and the Commies’ hooligan pop is one of Sudbury’s best exports, and Up Here marks the official release of their album “Here Come” with Slovenly Records. They make it look so easy. Fun fact: they gave their very first show in a back alley at Up Here in 2016, and now, they’re releasing an album internationally. PRIORS PRIORS are a punk band from Montreal that started as a bedroom project for vocalist Chance Hutchison, and has since evolved into something else entirely. The band includes Drew Demers of The Famines, Stuart Buckley of Stegosaurus, Alan Hildebrandt of Le Tabarnak and Sebastian Godin of Sonic Avenues. They released their first full length LP in March 2018 and are prepping the release of their second LP, New Pleasure, in October 2018. GHOST CAT Two Sudbury ex-pats and a local creating “trying-their-best-rock.” Their two albums, Aw Fuck and Fuck Ya, are curse-laden mantras for the modern age on therapy, hook-up culture, and hating people. Their goofy punk rock is youthful in its energy, but their cynicism is patently adult. DJ PETE SLOVENLY Get ready to move with this guy behind your turntables, or behind his own portable turntables (or under them! They've been seen hanging upside-down...

UP HERE 4: Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois / Mclean / Joanne Pollock

The Grand 23 Elgin Street, Sudbury

Get ready because we're kicking off Up Here 4 with venetian snares x Daniel Lanois, one of the most unique and captivating musical collaborations ever to come out of Canada. Presented in collaboration with La Slague. VENETIAN SNARES x DANIEL LANOIS This project is an unlikely meeting of musical minds: Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares) from Winnipeg, and Daniel Lanois originally from Hamilton known for working with Brian Eno, U2, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris. In this new project, Lanois focuses on creating gorgeous ambient soundscapes with his signature processed lap steel guitar, while Venetian Snares provides vivid contrasting genre-bending drum’n’bass & breakcore beats. When asked about the project, Lanois said : “It’s like playing clarinet with Squarepusher.” The result is one of the most captivating and unique musical collaborations ever to come out of Canada. A melange of gospel and electronics. MCLEAN / ALBUM LAUNCH McLean is a multi-instrumentalist from Sudbury. He spent his childhood travelling the hallways of an abandoned mine, guided by the ghostly voices of his ancestors. It's no surprise that he formed friendships with poet Sylvia Plath, mathematician John Nash, and musician James Taylor, who taught him to play the guitar during a brief stay at a psychiatric institute. In his great artistic heart he holds great ambitions and hopes to one day die in Sudbury. JOANNE POLLOCK Joanne Pollock if forging her unique brand of future-pop. She has released two EPs, one album with her band Poemss (featuring Venetian Snares) and one critically acclaimed solo album, Stranger. Pollock embraces unconventionality. Her music is a satisfying blend of warmth, folk, pop and glitchy electronics. Originally from Toronto, Winnipeg is currently where she calls home. Live Music with Duncan Cameron

Peddler's Pub 63 Cedar Street, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Duncan Cameron creates fresh and detailed folk music. His compositions and adaptations of old songs in both French and English reveal the depth and contrast of emotions in lyrics as well as instrumental music. To that end, his arrangements and compositions draw not only from Celtic roots but also classical music, funk, and other popular styles.

UP HERE 4: Mauno / Victime / Boyhood

Townehouse Tavern 206 Elgin Street, Sudbury, Canada

A merry-go-round of twisted grunge-pop, acid-punk and heartbreak. Presented by Stack Brewing. MAUNO Mauno (pronounced Mao-no) is ironically named after bassist/vocalist Eliza Niemi’s completely unmusical Finnish grandfather. They have a wandering sound that refuses to be pinned down. They strayed from twisting grunge-pop to raw, guttural, emotional punches. Their tales of botched romance and misdirected dreams play out above a bed of crunchy guitars and crashing cymbals. They’re charming af. VICTIME Acid-punk on a bed of ‘90s nostalgia. It’s discordant, wild, and probably what it feels like to get hit by lightning. Their noisy dance-punk madness shifts from fast-paced, punchy percussion to slow, carnivalesque electronic noise all filled out with some serious Riot grrrl vocals (but en français). Boyhood When Caylie Runciman started calling herself Boyhood, it was a nod to childhood nostalgia. Tough-kid guitar grit and deadpan verses give way to whimsical synth lines and delicate harmonies. But like an off-kilter merry-go-round, or a candy shop in a seedy part of town, there’s a shady layer to Runciman’s perfect pop. Her black magic is raw, equal parts ecstasy and heartbreak. In amongst the bright colours, there’s the joy and the pain in knowing what it means to grow up. TICKETS $15 advance / $20 at the door UP HERE Up Here is an urban art & emerging music festival in weird and wonderful downtown Sudbury that takes place from August 17-19. Follow Up Here festival, RSVP Up Here 4.
