Craftivism Night- Welcome Blanket Project

Sew Local Stitch Lounge 1165 Atlee Avenue, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Come knit a Welcome Blanket with us! No knitting experience required. The proposed border wall between the United States and Mexico is almost 2000 miles long. Imagine if the massive distance of this wall was re-conceptualized and re-contextualized not to divide, but to include. Instead of wall, a concrete line, to keep people out, what if lines of yarn became 3,500,640 yards of blankets to welcome people in? The Welcome Blanket project was started by Jayna Zweiman, cofounder of the Pussyhat Project. Let's show our U.S. neighbours some solidarity and join in on the Welcome Blanket project. Join us to make a welcome blanket for a new immigrant to the United States. Let’s build a project of inclusion together! Welcome Blanket allows us to connect locally and build positive community— and share this connection nationally and globally. A welcome blanket is traditionally created to lovingly mark the arrival of a new person into the world. In the Welcome Blanket project, each handmade blanket is a physical manifestation of this celebration of new refugees and other immigrants: “Welcome to the United States and your new life here! We are so glad you have arrived.” The blankets you make, along with your enclosed notes, will be displayed together in an inaugural show at the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago until December 17. After the show's close, the blanket packages will be distributed to refugees and other immigrants through resettlement organizations. The Smart Museum catalogues the blanket and the note, and posts it to our website www.welcomeblanket.org/gallery so we can watch the distance of inclusion grow! When: Monday, October 2, 6-8pm Cost: $5- will be used to help pay postage to ship the blanket(s). Supplies: Please bring 1 or 2 colours of washable (super wool or acrylic) bulky weight yarn and...

Lionel Venne: Selections from the Studio

One Sky - Local Fine Goods 125 Durham Street, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Join us in celebrating the art of Lionel Venne. Opening Reception: October 5th, 6-8 p.m. Show runs October 5-15. Lionel Venne was awarded First Place in sculpture for "Balance", and First Place in mixed media for "Ancient Landscape" at the 40th Lacloche Art Show in June of 2017. Lionel is self taught in the arts: works in collage / mixed media, watercolours, acrylics, and tapestry. His works are included in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, England, Scotland, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Australia, France and Italy. Artist Statement Found objects, no matter how humble they may be, are not created or destroyed by my hand - only transformed into a work - thus becoming in a state of constant transformation and therefore permanent. They keep their inner life. Other hands have formed them - if wood then probably the original sap of life flows still within. The physical process by which I create each work involves that of transformtion, which is the theme I am attempting to address subjectively - using form and line found in the landscape - that in turn influences my approach to the subject, incorporating a sense of the spiritual and the abstract, producing works that I trust are simultaneously meditative and energic. The resulting works combine elements of landscape, inpasto textures, and geometric forms. I want to make the landscape my own - stripped of its accumulated associations.

Aerialists LIVE, presented by NLFB

Townehouse Tavern 206 Elgin Street, Sudbury, Canada

Join #NLFB2017 favourite Aerialists as they launch their brand new album Group Manoeuvre! We are thrilled to welcome them back to Sudbury so soon. They are sure to provide an evening of musical acrobatics and dazzling sounds. BIO: In a world where hyphenated genres are becoming the norm, all kinds of monikers are available for a contemporary folk band, Aerialists fits best with the beautifully contradictory term prog-trad. Melding their ferociously creative harmonic sensibilities with a deep love for folk traditions, expect intricately crafted instrumental folk, woven through jazz and post-rock soundscapes. Aerialists formed in early 2014 when long-time collaborators Adam Iredale-Gray (Fish & Bird) and Elise Boeur (Jenny Ritter) joined Mairi Chaimbeul (Darol Anger & The Furies). The band usually performs as a quintet, joined by exceptional bassists Nate Sabat and Wynston Minckler, and drummers including Jake Jenne, Sean Trischka, and Steven Foster. $12 in adv. & $15 at the door. Children are permitted, accompanied by an adult. Doors: 7:30pm Show start: 8:00pm Tickets are available for purchase online at: http://nlfb.ca/aerialists/. Tickets will also be available at The Townehouse Tavern and the NLFB office (19 Grey St.) starting on Sept. 11. Note: the NLFB office currently has irregular hours, so best to call ahead if you'd like to purchase there: 705-674-5512. The Townehouse Tavern has a great menu of gourmet burgers and other items, so if you'd like to have dinner before the show, please reserve directly with them: (705) 674-6883.
