Making History: Laurentian’s Women Hockey Season Recap
This was a BIG year for the Lady Vees. For the very first time, the Laurentian Women’s hockey team appeared in the first round of the post-season. It was a ground-breaking moment for Laurentian and for the players involved, as well as the hockey program in Sudbury. We spoke with Head Coach Stacey Colarossi and two of the Lady Vees athletes, who shared with us their thoughts on this past season. Throughout the season, the Vees came together to string together 11 wins and 13 losses. The Women’s Ice Hockey team was introduced three years ago. It set a standard for success, and the Voyageurs are looking to build consistency. This season set the expectations high. According to Colarossi, they are ahead of schedule in their plans to bring the program to the next level.
The Women’s Ice Hockey team was introduced three years ago. It set a standard for success, and the Voyageurs are looking to build consistency. This season set the expectations high. According to Colarossi, they are ahead of schedule in their plans to bring the program to the next level.
With the season completed, the Voyageurs are bringing new pieces to the puzzle to complete their already strong team. Currently, they are focused on celebrating what they achieved this year while keeping an eye on the 2017 season ahead of them.
“I think over the course of the year, there has been some great leadership, but we’ve been winning by committee with multiple goal scorers in the line-up,” said Colarossi. She also mentioned that there were a lot of key people behind the scene to help make it all happen.
Morgan McCann, a first year SPAD student, and first year Voyageur performed very well this season with 5 points consisting of assists and participated in all 24 games. We asked what it was like to make history with her teammates, “We had a strong start and we were all so close as a team, and I think that really contributed to our on-ice success.”
When asked what it means to be part of the Voyageurs family, McCann was candid about the experience; “It makes me so proud to be a part of such a close-knit team and school where everyone supports each other.”
Maggie Brennan, who is also a SPAD student in her third year, has been with the program since its inception. She was great this year as well, with 6 assists and a goal throughout the season. Brennan also was very proud of the team’s growth; “Seeing the team go from what it was three years ago to where it is now, and finally showing our potential was awesome.”
Winning key match-ups against top teams such as the Guelph Gryphons, a team that Laurentian had never held a victory over in the past, was a definite highlight according to all three ladies, especially since it took place in the post-season.
With regards to expectations for next season, Laurentian looks to build on a team that is already defying expectations, being a new face in the OUA post-season landscape. Head Coach Colarossi, Morgan McCann and Maggie Brennan, as well as the rest of the Lady Vees, look forward to what’s next for them while enjoying the feeling of accomplishing something unprecedented.
