Tell us about Reading Town

In 2008, a group of volunteers got together to discuss how Canada could become a country of readers. The National Reading Campaign incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2012, with a mission to make reading a national priority and a vision to create, sustain, and grow a society in which everyone has an equal opportunity to become and remain a lifelong reader. Books have the ability to invoke inner emotions through the simple power of words and open our minds to new concepts, ideas, and worlds we never thought imaginable. And now, reading has its very own festival! After successful first and second editions in Moose Jaw and Charlottetown, Reading Town / Ville Lecture is coming to Sudbury for its 3rd edition and its very first multilingual edition. Reading Town / Ville Lecture runs from April 30th to May 8th 2016 this year in Sudbury.

Why was Sudbury selected to host this year’s event?

Can you feel it in Sudbury? The vibrancy and the enthusiasm? We sure can! The organizers of Reading Town / Ville Lecture are astounded that everywhere we turn in Sudbury, we seem to find someone that is an avid reader, writer, or creative artist. Sudbury was nominated by the nationwide panel of authors, publishers, librarians, academics, teachers and volunteers that make up the National Reading Campaign’s Board of Directors. Sudbury was picked for its unicity in linguistic duality, as well as its proximaty to the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation and its cultural effervescence of a big population that is shouting it: We are here Canada! And we’re loving it!
