Greater Sudbury Public Library – It’s Not Just For Books Anymore!
With Reading Town hitting the scene and literary community is on fire this week! Naturally we find Greater Sudbury Public Library at the centre of the action. Maybe you’re a casual library user or maybe it’s been years since you’ve visited your local branch – but did you know it’s a whole lot more than books?! With GSPL in the spotlight we got in touch to find out all the resources available, and all you need is a library card!
In partnership with Ramakko’s Source for Adventure, GSPL offers library card holders the chance to enjoy a day of fishing on the water. Available for week long rental take home a reel, rod, and fully equipped tackle box. What better way is there to spend a warm summer day? Tackle Share Program will be available at the Main (Mackenzie) library with plans to expand to other locations – contact your closest branch to check availability.
Six GSPL locations are equipped with 6 sets of kid size and 4 sets of adult sized snow shoes for all your winter fun! Enjoy the kind of scenery you can only find in Northern Ontario all year round and try out a new winter activity with your whole family! Snowshoe lending program available at the following locations: Garson, Levack/Onaping, Lively, Main (Mackenzie), South End, and Valley East with more locations coming in January 2017.
Want to learn a little more about your family tree? GSPL has everything you need! From city directories, church records, school yearbooks and microfilms of newspapers starting as early as 1891 you’re sure to find what you’re looking for! You can even access the Greater Sudbury Historical Database online from home. Check out their Getting Started Guide to get the ball rolling. Local History Collection available on the Research Level of the Main (Mackenzie) library.
The extensive Local History Collection is a veritable time machine of information. Look back on microfilms of the Sudbury Journal, Northern Life even some issues of the Globe and Mail going back as far as 1891. Here you’ll also have access to census records, pamphlets even local studies on the environment. The Local History Collection is available on the Research Level of the Main (Mackenzie) library.
Have a big project you want to tackle and not sure where to start your research? Book a librarian and they’ll show you how to get started the Dewey Decimal way! Book one on one time with a member of GSPL’s experienced staff and they’ll show you how to take full advantage of all the resources the library has to offer and help get you on the right path. Library staff are also available to assist in learning how to make the best use out of digital devices and tutorials on proper usage of Makerspace equipment. This program is only available at the Main (Mackenzie) Library.
Want to feed your brain but just can’t seem to make it to the library? They’ve got you covered! Their GSPL Anytime, Anywhere Collection allows access to a huge array of ebooks and audio books for borrow. If that’s not enough you can also access their stock of digital magazines or stream full-length independent films from Indieflix on any device.
The Makerspace located in the Main (Mackenzie) library is a treasure trove of resources for crafty folk in Sudbury! Equipment available includes 3D Printers and scanners, sewing machines, green screen, vinyl cutter and tools to make just about anything. The concept is simple: it’s a space where you can learn new technology and skills, share your expertise, and test out your new knowledge by creating things! Makerlab programs for adults give makers in the community a chance to meet, to share information, and collaborate on projects. Programs for kids and youth include Lego and Minecraft Club. Coming this summer: a Maker-in–Residence. A local maker will be featured in the space offering programs and expertise to the local community.
Register to get started, “borrow” seeds, grow your plant, and harvest seeds to return and continue building the collection. This program connects horticulturalists new and old to share tips and tricks and increases stock of biodiverse, locally-adapted seeds. Register at Main (Mackenzie) library and browse the see collection with packets available at all locations to donate seeds. This program was created in partnership with local gardening experts and community groups.
This family-friendly program brings stories to life and invites participants to enjoy a casual hike. As you walk at your own pace along the 1km self-guided trail keep an eye out for signs telling the story as you go. The most recent Tales on the Trails featured Melissa’s Magnificent Message the story of a special honey bee who needs your help to make the planet greener.
