Matt Schouten is really hitting his stride. Success has come again this season for the Laurentian swimmer, following last year’s strong performance as Laurentian’s Rookie of the Year. In his second year as a Mining Engineering student, and as a varsity athlete for Laurentian, Matt has made the transition from freshman to sophomore success.
This year, Matt was also awarded the Male Athlete of the Year for his accomplishments, “This year was all about keeping that momentum going. I have a great team, with great coaches that helped me get better along the way. For me it was proof that last year was no fluke performance.”
Laurentian’s Men’s Swimming team currently has 12 members and is growing in reputation and size; the team is led by Head Coach Phil Parker.
Some quick highlights from this season for Matt were three gold and one silver medal at the Divisional Championships this past November, followed quickly by a silver medal in the 50m freestyle for the Ontario University Athletics Championships in February. This also qualifies him for the Olympic trials in April. Finally, during the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships, he finished fourth in the 50m freestyle, “The opportunity to race against the fastest guys in the country; that’s a humbling experience for sure, especially since there is a lot of international talent present this year.”
When asked what it means to him to represent Laurentian at this level and call himself a Voyageur, Matt had this to say, “Wearing the V means a lot to me, personally. I came here on a recruiting trip, and instantly fell in love with everything the school has to offer. My coaches program really brings a great approach to the Varsity Swimmer’s lifestyle. Also, the athletics department is very of supportive of its team and you can’t find that at every school. I definitely take a lot of pride in being a Voyageur.”
