Sailor Moon, Star Wars, and Doctor Who: Get your Geek Fix at Mojoverse
Have you heard of Mojoverse yet? Storeowners Maurice and Joelle know how to bring geeky-cool to the Sudbury community! Located on the Kingsway, Mojoverse is a specialty store carrying everything from clothing to collectibles, comics, and pop-culture memorabilia. We talked with the owners to find out more!
The first thing we want to know is, what is Mojoverse? And where did the idea come from?
Mojoverse is a specialty retail store by geeks for geeks on 1264 Kingsway Boulevard in Sudbury. We, Maurice Charette and Joelle Lavoie, have been going to Fan Expo, a convention in Toronto that caters to Anime, Sci-Fi, Video Games, Comics, and Horror, for the past 8 years. Most of the time it wasn’t feasible to go all that way and spend all that money over one weekend, so it gave us the idea to start our own business here in Sudbury due to the high demand and lack of stores that do this in our hometown.
The name of the store comes from the combination of both of our names (Moe and Joe) and “verse” is short for “universe” as in we live and breathe this culture. It has also been pointed out to us that it also references an obscure X-Men comic book villain!
What sort of products do you sell and what market do you cater to?
We sell anime/sci-fi/video game merchandise such as apparel, plush toys, action figures, jewelry, collectibles, etc. The products have a sense of nostalgia for the type of things that they love whether they are children or adults. People like to show off what their interests are, and meet other people who have those same interests, as they are good conversation starters.
What sets Mojoverse apart from other specialty stores in the north?
We LOVE the idea of having a shop like this right here in Sudbury! We try to have a variety of different items to appeal to everyone and we make sure we carry products that are rare and hard to find, even in Canada. We import all of our items from the United States and Japan. We try to stock different items that other stores don’t carry and we are always open to customers’ suggestions. We like to make sure everyone has a pleasant overall experience with us. We had our Grand Opening December 19th, 2015 and we’ve already had amazing feedback for deciding to open our store!
How do you see Mojoverse growing and changing in the upcoming years?
We try to make our products as interesting as possible by always rotating our stock for repeat customers so they will find something new every time they visit. We also make sure to stay on top of news and movie/game releases to feature certain products that pertain to them. At some point we would obviously love to have a bigger store for more products, and space to be able to hosts more events.
We hear you have a cosplay event coming up. Can you tell us a little more about it?
Yes, we ask that people come dressed up as their favorite anime/ sci-fi/video game characters and they can get featured in an article (with photo) in the Northern Life! Also, it’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about Cosplay, to network with other Cosplayers, and to browse our products. There will be pop and pizza at this event and everyone is welcome. It starts at 12:00 p.m. and will be ending at 5:00 p.m. February 20th, 2016 at our store location.
Fun Fact:
One particular product that we are fond of at Mojoverse is our Chair Capes. It’s a cape from Batman, Superman or Batgirl and Supergirl that adjusts to any office chair. We have some for ourselves at the store because they are so unique and a great and simple way to decorate your office or room!
