Hockey With a Cause: Vees Fight ALS!
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease, affects thousands of Canadians and their families every year. Seb Leroux, a Laurentian Voyageurs hockey player, knows this to be true, as ALS has affected his own family. But, he’s decided it’s time to fight back! Seb shared his family’s story with us, and also told us how he and the Laurentian Voyageurs hockey team have paired up with the Adaptive Canuck ALS Foundation to raise awareness and join the battle against ALS.
Seb’s Story
Seb’s father was diagnosed with ALS this summer. After conducting research on the disease, his father decided to look up Jeffrey Perreault, the founder of the Adaptive Canuck ALS Foundation. The name of the foundation itself comes from the need to be continuously adapting to everyday life and chores. The Adaptive Canuck ALS foundation now has the support of Seb’s father, Michel Leroux, with the intentions of finding a cure for this disease that has struck many families and changed the lives of those it affects. The Foundation, along with “the colossal help of Toronto doctors”, as Seb has noted, has made several major and ground-breaking strides that could one day lead to curing the disease.
As a member of the Laurentian Voyageurs, and in an effort to raise awareness about this disease, Seb decided to collaborate with the Laurentian Athletics department to make an impact in the fight against ALS. The “Vees Fight ALS Charity Game” takes place Saturday February the 6th at the Countryside Sports Complex at 7:45pm! Proceeds from ticket sales and donations will all go towards the Adaptive Canuck ALS Foundation.
Join the Fight
Tickets for the hockey game cost $10 for the general public, and $5 for Laurentian students and alumni. They can be purchased at the Athletics Desk in the Ben Avery Building at Laurentian University. If you are unable to make it to the game, but still want to join in the fight against ALS, you can donate directly here.
Seb had a message for those hoping to attend the game and all who donate: “Let’s make a difference and put an end to this rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease!”
