The exhibition is steeped in references to art and design history, notably drawing a clear line between the Bauhaus and the kind of mass-produced contemporary furnishings best represented by Swedish furniture giants IKEA. Out of This Light, Into This Shadow – Via the techniques of collage and assemblage, Juan Ortiz-Apuy explores the concept of Junkspace, which advances the notion of junk food to our entire built environment. The resulting animated sculptural landscape sets the stage for absurd “characters” that refer to past art histories and design languages. On one of the structures fashioned from IKEA shelves, you can read the phrase “from bauhaus to your house”. And so the artist draws a straight line between the foundations of modern architecture and contemporary consumer cultures. The appeal of novel objects can be seductive, like the light from a Bauhaus lamp that attracts the dried moths placed here and there by Ortiz-Apuy. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. @ Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario – 174 Elgin Street
