Woman Crush Wednesday? How About Woman Crush EVERYDAY!

Woman Crush Wednesday? How About Woman Crush EVERYDAY!

International Women’s Day was yesterday, but here in Sudbury we’re making it last all week long! Because guess what? The world isn’t perfect, and although we don’t like to admit it women still aren’t getting the credit they deserve. Feminism has definitely been the hot topic issue of the day bringing with it issues such as the glass ceiling, wage gaps and consent – but the heart of the issue really boils down to equality. Feminism by definition is the belief that every person regardless of race, sex, religion or any other label you can think of should be treated with equal respect. What a magical world that would be, huh? While we’re all out there trying our best to make the world a better place this week, make sure you take some time to thank an outstanding woman in your life for being just plain awesome! And to all you ladies out there reading – keep living the dream! To give you a little inspiration today we put together a list of some of our everyday woman crushes for you, get ready for some #girlpower!

“Whatever you choose, however many roads you travel, I hope that you choose not to be a lady. I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And I also hope that you will choose to make some of that trouble on behalf of women.” – Nora Ephron

Adriana:

Emma Watson

I always thought Hermione Granger was cool, but then I found out that the girl who played her was even cooler. I mean, Emma Watson postponed her acting career to pursue education. She’s also an activist, a UN Goodwill Ambassador, and she has a feminist bookclub. Aside from acting and modelling, she spends her time working hard to create change by fighting for human rights and gender equality. Did I mention she’s also a yoga instructor, a painter, and a certified scuba diver?

And she’s only 25. #heforshe

Anthony:

Ronda Rousey

She is a trailblazer for women in sports in the mainstream. A movie star, incredible athlete, and an example of confidence in one self and ones body. She is a great example of tenacity and determination for both men and women.

Emmalee:

Lena Dunham

Writer, Director, Actress, Podcaster, Author, Feminist, Journalist etc, etc, etc. I have mad respect for Lena Dunham. First off, Girls is hands down the best comedy/drama on air thanks to Lena Dunham and her honest, but satirical view on what it is to be a 20-something, and of course I also applaud her so hard for what her scenes have done for the body positivity movement. Secondly, her podcast Women Of The Hour gave a great perspective on female issues, struggles, and relationships and opened my eyes to women’s issues that I personally hadn’t faced before. Lastly, Lenny Letter is a great read with interesting interviews, an honest perspective on current topics, and excellent guest writers. Lena Dunham is my #wcw so hard.

Emily:

Taylor Swift

She is the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, has been named the most charitable celebrity and has formed a group of powerful women who are the real definition of #squadgoals. Taylor Swift is obviously my woman crush and there are no shortages of reasons why: She puts all of our feelings into song lyrics. Her dancing is a thing of beauty. Seriously, the only reason I ever watch awards shows is to catch a glimpse of her and her awkward but perfect dance moves. She absolutely KILLED it with her 1989 tour. Her acceptance speech at the Grammys was empowering and her subtle dig at Kanye West proved once again just how classy she really is. It isn’t uncommon to hear that she has donated to some great causes, sent personalized gifts or shown up to surprise a fan in need. She fights for musicians rights (and wins) and she is constantly using her fame as a platform to do good. It’s safe to say that I’ll be a Swiftie for life.

Jessica:

Oprah Winfrey

She’s the ultimate rags to riches story! She grew up in poverty with a single teenage mother, overcame abuse, racism and the general attitude of those close to her telling her she should aspire to be anything more.  After moving in with an Uncle who forced her to make her education a priority she flourished, became an honour roll student, won countless awards and went on to study Communication (just like me!) at Tennessee State University with a full scholarship. After school she became the youngest and very first black female news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV! It wasn’t until 1986 that The Oprah Winfrey Show came about and we all welcomed her into our homes for an hour a day for 25 years. She continues to fight for girl’s rights and knows how much access to education can change the life of young girls in developing nations. This is why she founded the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, to support the development of a new generation of dynamic woman leaders. Even in “retirement” she’s still working hard with her OWN Network, Harpo Studios, acting – basically running a media empire (they don’t say “Oprah rich” for nothing)! That’s what I call #girlpower!

Lars:

Rosa Parks

I admire Rosa Parks for her work towards equality, for example, because of her small act of rebellion on that bus one day long ago, Martin Luther King Jr, an unknown clergyman, was raised to national prominence and concluded in the US Supreme Court decision that outlawed segregation on city buses. Rosa helped make her fellow Americans aware of the history of the civil rights struggle over the next four years. Her example remains an inspiration to freedom-loving people everywhere.
